Rev. Billie O. McCarty
Reverend Billie O. McCarty, 81, of Springfield, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday morning, January 8, 2008 in the Springfield Regional Hospital, Fountain Campus.
He was born on August 7, 1926 in Salyersville, Kentucky, the son of John B. and Lavinia (Dyer) McCarty.
Billie spent most of his life ministering the Gospel in the Free Will Baptist Church. He pastored churches in Urbana, West Jefferson, Youngstown, and California, where he retired in 1990. He and his wife Nora Lee lived in Georgia from 1990 until 2006, when they returned to Springfield. While in Georgia he was an Assistant Pastor at Liberty Baptist Church and was actively involved with Family Life Ministries of Tennessee. Billie offered his life, without limit, as a gentle and humble servant. He is esteemed by all who were blessed to learn from his patient compassion and wise counsel. His memory will be warmly cherished for his generous support, his wonderful humor, and his sweetness of heart.
He is survived by his wife Nora Lee (Miller) McCarty of fifty-eight years, two daughters and sons-in-law: Diana and Richard B. Hankie of Yellow Springs, Teresa and Robert Hooper of South Carolina; three sons and daughters-in-law: Stephen and Debra McCarty of Virginia, Douglas and Judy McCarty of California, and Steve McCarty of Arizona; ten grandchildren and their spouses: Carrie and Aaron Cambell, Erin Hankie, Nathan Hankie, Erika and Jason Yaman, Matt and Laura Hooper, Andrea McCarty, Megan McCarty, Heather and Ryan Hucks, Angela and Chris Carey, and Alyssa McCarty; ten great grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law: Mary Dennison of Pennsylvania, Eloise and Roger Moreland of Youngstown; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Cecil and Alma McCarty of Springfield, Sturgell and Judy McCarty of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Willard, Hershal, and Chatham.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2008 from 5-8 pm in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. A celebration of his life and ministry will be held on Friday at 10:30 am in the First Free Will Baptist Church, 1028 Lafayette Ave., Springfield. Burial will follow in the Harmony Township Cemetery.
