Joseph G. Leugers


Joseph G. Leugers, 89, of Springfield, died at 2:20 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 in Oakwood Village Care Center. He was born March 17, 1919 in Mercer County, Ohio to Herman and Leona Leugers.

He was 1937 Class Valedictorian at Maria Stein High School and graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Joseph's College in Indiana where he lettered in baseball and basketball. In 1941 he started a career at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a budget analyst at Air Force Logistics Command and enlisted in the Air Force during World War II from 1942-1945. He retired from Wright Patterson in 1974 after 33 years of service.

Joe served as St. Mary's Parish athletic director and also served 14 years as the director of Springfield CYO baseball program. In 1966 he was selected as the Springfield Catholic Man of the Year. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus councils 3737 and 624 and was Grand Knight at council 3737 and was also a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church where he was involved in various parish roles as lector, server and distributed communion. His favorite pastime was all sports with his children and grandchildren and loved to hunt, fish and play golf.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen M. (Samosky); five children and spouses, Joyce (Jeff) Collier, Springfield, Jerry (Cheree) Leugers, Greenwood, Indiana, Jim (Sheila) Leugers, Franklin, Indiana, Jeanne (Joe) Linge, Port Orange, Florida and John (Carrie) Leugers, Niceville, Florida; 10 grandchildren; Five great grandchildren; one sister, Rosemary Moeller, Maria Stein, Ohio; two brothers and spouse, Henry Leugers and Art (Bonnie) Leugers, Maria Stein, Ohio and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Collier and a sister, Alvina Bernard.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the funeral Saturday in the CONROY FUNERAL HOME. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Raphael Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society or the Jason Collier Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Catholic Central High School Foundation.
