Gene Layne
Gene Layne, 71, of Springfield, died Thursday evening, November 6, 2008 in his residence following a courageous battle with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN). He was born in Gallia County, Ohio on May 9, 1937 the son of Herman and Goldie (Cox) Layne.
He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Gene retired from Teamsters Local #654 after 32 years of service. He was a member of Kissell Lodge 674 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, Antioch Shrine, F.O.E. Aerie 397, V.F.W. Post 3660, D.A.V. Chapter 13, and the Union Club. He enjoyed fishing, camping and motorcycling and will be remembered for his humor and quick wit. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gene is survived by his wife of 29 years, Gail (Pendell) Layne; seven children and spouses, Ruth and Jim Tirey of Springfield, Bobby and Rhonda Zimmers of Springfield, Ronnie and Marissa Layne of Sebring, Florida, David and Kelly Layne of Springfield, Danny and Pam Henry of Centerville, Lori and Tim Lykins of Springfield, and Todd and Kerry Henry of Springfield; nineteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Herman (Wanda) Layne of Springfield; a step-sister, Sondra (Racy) Howard of Springfield; several nieces and nephews; his beloved pet, Sadie; and his extended family, Todd (Laura) Burgess, Kenny (Peggy) Lovejoy, Jodie Diffendahl, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandmother, Nan Layne; and a brother, Ernie Layne.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Masonic services will be held at 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with Rev. Danny Miller officiating. Burial will military honors be in Silvercreek Cemetery, Jamestown.
