Robert Snyder Hamilton


Robert S. "Bob" Hamilton, 95, former president of Springfield Newspapers, Inc., passed away Wednesday morning, September 12, 2007 in the Mercy St John's Center.

He was born January 13, 1912 in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Adelbert and Mary Katherine (Snyder) Hamilton.

Bob joined the Springfield Newspapers, Inc., in 1935, accumulated 41 years of service with the organization before retiring in 1977. He was first employed in the circulation department and in 1947 was named promotion manager. In 1949 he was appointed executive assistant; in 1954 was named business manager; assistant general manager in 1958; executive vice president and general manager in 1964. Hamilton was a graduate of Wittenberg University where he was an All-Buckeye Conference basketball player and had a unique position of coaching and playing on the tennis team. He had been active in the Springfield tennis program and was former city singles and doubles champion. He was a former member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Springfield Country Club, a former trustee of the Springfield Foundation, United Way and Junior Achievement. In 1991 Hamilton was one of seven former Wittenberg Tiger athletes inducted in Wittenberg University's Athletic Hall of Honor. Bob was a former board member of the Springfield Cemetery Association/Ferncliff Cemetery. He was a member of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 1965-1967, member of the Van Dyke Club, trustee for both the American Fidelity Investments and the Springfield Foundation for 26 years. Mr. Hamilton was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a lieutenant and served our country proudly during World War II. Bob will be sadly missed by all of his friends at the Mercy St John's Center and by everyone else who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sugar and Steve Hannah of Charlotte, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Kim and Kris Hannah both of Charlotte, North Carolina and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marion E. (Kiester) Hamilton in 1992 and brother, Leonard J. Hamilton.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 1 p.m. in the Covenant Presbyterian Church with Reverend Raymond Stewart officiating. Family is being served by the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. A private inurnment will be held in the Ferncliff Cemetery.
