John E. Harris


John E. Harris a.k.a. "Big Cheese", 87, of Urbana, went to be with the Lord Saturday afternoon, June 16, 2007 in Mercy Medical Center.

He was born in Canal Winchester, Ohio on July 11, 1919 the son of John M. and Viola (Barnhart) Harris.

John owned and operated Brockman Furnace Company for a number of years before entering the real estate business. A life-long learner, John held an A.A. degree from Edison State, a B.S. degree in education from Urbana University, and B.A. degrees in both sociology and philosophy from Wright State University. John was a generous, caring person that influenced every life he touched.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Norma (Neatherton) Harris; sons, John Monroe (Nancy) Harris of Burlington, South Carolina, Paul R. Harris of Texas, Todd A. (Rhonda) Harris of Ashland, Ohio, and Gregory (Amanda) Ping and Stephen (Jan) Ping of Springfield; and daughters, Martie (Steve) Crane of Chandler, Arizona and Betsi (Steve) Harris of Coconut Creek, Florida. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert (Doris) Harris and Paul (Ruth) Harris both of South Carolina; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

There will be no visitation. A private family memorial service is planned for Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of one's choice.
