Benjamin G. Hartman


Benjamin G. Hartman, 67, died Christmas Eve 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in preparation for emergency surgery.

Born in his Springfield home on Oct. 29, 1940, his parents were the late Mary Elizabeth (Rowe) and Harry George Hartman.

He lived in Springfield through the mid-1960s when he and his family moved to Englewood, Ohio. He returned to live in Springfield in the mid-1990s. Mr. Hartman was an outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He was known for his bread baking and gardening. He lived at Hartman's Historical Rock Garden in Springfield, which his father created in the 1930s and his mother preserved and showcased -- giving tours and selling flower and vegetable plants there and earning community beautification awards for years. He was a 1956 Springfield South High School graduate, and attended college courses in Texas and in Ohio. Mr. Hartman was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Texas from 1959-1961. He worked at the Clark County Regional Planning Commission in Springfield in the early 1960s. He owned and operated both Design-Hartman and Dayton Slideworks, Inc. He designed tooling dies, special machines and gages mainly for companies in Dayton and Springfield from 1966 until he retired in the late 1990s. He was instrumental in creating the Englewood Auxiliary Patrol and neighborhood watch program in the late 1970s. He coached his son's S.A.Y. soccer team in the late 1970s.

He is survived by his daughter Denise L. Canady (husband Brian) of Dublin, Indiana; son B. Scott Hartman of Kettering; daughter Elizabeth K. Fink (husband Steven) of Dayton; grandsons Nicholas, Thomas, Luke, and Timothy; granddaughters Clarissa and Lilian; step-grandsons Tyler Canady and Justin Robb; former wife Mary Beth Hartman, New Carlisle, whom he married on Dec. 23, 1962; her mother Dorothy E. Pittenger, New Carlisle; sister, Ruth Hoover (husband Ned) of Springfield; an aunt, Gladys Baker of Chambersburg, PA, a niece Karen (Paul) Hill; and nephews Dale (Jody) and Jeff Hoover.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Elizabeth (Hartman) Snapp, and a brother, Roy Hartman.

Friends may call Sunday at the Conroy Funeral Home from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at the funeral home, 1660 E. High St., Springfield, at 3:30 p.m., with Pastor Tracy Wright of the Cambridge City Christian Church, Cambridge City, Ind., and Father Geoff Drew of St. Rita's Catholic Church, Dayton, officiating.
