James Howard Elliott


James Howard Elliott, 95, formerly of Longboat Key, Florida and residing in Springfield and Urbana since June of 2001, passed away Monday evening, September 29, 2008 in the Alterra Sterling House of Urbana.

He was an executive with International Harvester Company, now Navistar.

He was born in Gotebo, Oklahoma in 1913 and his family moved to Colorado in his preschool years. He was a graduate of Colorado State University in 1936 and of the University of Chicago Executive program in 1957, MBA degree and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

He married Lillian Segelke in October of 1936 and his entire career was with International Harvester which began in 1937 in Springfield, Ohio. Four years later he was moved to Chicago and his continuing career was in several areas.

Prior to his promotion to an executive position in the Company Headquarters in Chicago he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the American Society of Refrigeration Engineers, a Director of the Southern Indiana Council of Boy Scouts of America and a Vestryman and Junior Warden of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Later in Chicago he was one of the founders of the Men's Club and a chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest, Illinois.

He retired in September of 1975 and the Elliotts moved to their new home on Longboat Key, Florida. He was a founding member and Vestryman of a newly organized church, All Angels by the Sea. He served on the building committees, the Vestries and was Senior Warden from 1995 to 1999. He also served as President of the International Harvester (now Navistar) Retirees Club and as President of the St. Andrew Society of Sarasota. He was an active member of his Scottish Clan, Elliot, and represented his clan at various Highland Games.

He was an avid golfer, an amateur portrait and landscape painter, authored an unpublished novel on business and left as a legacy to his family a published genealogy of the Elliott, McConnell and related families.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian in May 14, 2004.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Diane Elliott McConnell (Robert B.) of Urbana, Ohio; four grandchildren, Carol, James, Julia and Mary; seven great grandchildren.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. in the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 230 Scioto Street, Urbana, Ohio 43078 with Reverend Tim West officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held in the Parish Hall following the service.

Memorial gifts may be made to the church.

Jim's cremated remains will be scattered in the Memorial Gardens at All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church, Longboat Key, Florida.

The family is being served by the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.
