Helen Jeanette Carey
Helen Jeanette Carey, 82, of Enon, died Thursday, November 1, 2007 in Enon.
She was born in Melvin (Clinton County), Ohio, on November 11, 1924 to Harry Lowell and Florence Opal Taylor Baker. Her childhood was spent on the farm, and she enjoyed every moment of it with her loving and caring parents and sister, Julia. She graduated from Frankfort High School, Frankfort, Ohio, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, in May 1942.
In September 1942, she was employed by the U.S. Government as a Clerk-Typist and was assigned to the Cargo Section of the Flight Test Division at Wright Field. She loved her job and made many lasting friendships. There, she met her future husband, Jack Donald Carey, who was an aircraft mechanic in the Cargo Maintenance Section, and they were married in Dayton, Ohio, on May 28, 1949. They purchased a home in the village of Enon in November 1952, and Jeanette continued to be employed as the Aircraft Dispatcher for the Cargo Section until 1954 when she decided to "retire." Almost immediately thereafter, she was asked to serve an unexpired term as Clerk of the Village Council. She served another full term as Clerk and an unexpired term as Treasurer, and in 1959 was employed as the Clerk of the Enon Water Department. She continued to serve in that capacity until her retirement in 1980.
Jeanette was a member of the Enon Knob Prairie United Church of Christ and was the first woman to be elected to serve on the Board of Trustees. She served as Moderator many times, as Financial Secretary, as Clerk, and Chaired (or was a member of) many Boards and Committees. Jeanette was the great, great granddaughter of Jonathan D. and Sarah Baker, two of the founders of Knob Prairie Church in 1806. She was a past member of the Enon Lioness Club, a charter member of the Enon Historical Society, a charter member of the Enon Keen-Agers, a charter member of the Enon Sun Dial Garden Club, a member of the First Families of Clark County, a member of the George Rogers Heritage Association, a member of the Animal Welfare League of Clark County, a member of the Rebecca Galloway Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution of Fairborn, Ohio, the Organizing President of the Cornelis Melyn Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century of Enon, and a member of the Columbus, Ohio, chapter of the National Society of New England Women.
Jeanette loved her many, many friends, her church, her home, her pets, gardening and houseplants.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, her parents, and her sister, Julia Irene Thompson. She will be missed by her very dear friends: Bob and Doris Bacon, Colin and Terry Roach and many others.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, November 5, 2007 in the Enon Knob Prairie United Church of Christ with pastor Thomas Ritschard-Sell officiating. Burial will follow the service in Enon Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Sunday, November 4th in Adkins Funeral Home, 7055 Dayton- Springfield Road, Enon, Ohio, 45323. Donations may be made in Jeanette's memory to the Memorial Fund of the Knob Prairie United Church of Christ, Enon, Ohio.
