THE FIFTY-EIGHTS O.V.I.

was organized at Camp Chase, during the fall and winter of 1861-62. Left the State February 10, 1862, and arrived at Fort Donelson on the 13th of February. Its commanding officer was the first to enter the fort, and, with his own hands, hauled down the first rebel flag the regiment ever saw. The Fifty-eighth took part in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, Helena, Milliken's Bend, Haines' Bluff, Greenville, Johnson's Landing, Arkansas Post and Grand Gulf. It served as marine guard on board the ironclads of the Mississippi flotilla, and was in that portion which run the gantlet of the Vicksburg batteries on the night of the 16th of April, 1863. The regiment was mustered out at Camp Chase, on the 14th of January, 1865.
